Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Health Tips
The ear, nose, and throat form a vital sensory and functional system responsible for hearing, smell, swallowing, voice production, and balance. Maintaining ENT health not only improves quality of life but also helps prevent many chronic diseases. Here are some practical daily care tips:
Ear Health Care
-
Avoid prolonged exposure to loud noise
Long-term exposure to high-decibel environments (e.g., concerts, construction sites, or headphones at high volume) can cause irreversible damage to the inner ear. Use earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones for protection and keep headphone volume below 60% of maximum.
-
Clean your ears correctly
Never use cotton buds or sharp objects to dig your ears, as this may injure the ear canal or push earwax deeper. The ear has a natural self-cleaning mechanism. If earwax builds up excessively, consult a doctor for professional ear cleaning.
-
Prevent ear infections
Avoid letting water remain in the ears for long periods. After swimming, gently dry the ears with a towel or tilt your head to drain water. Seek medical attention promptly if you experience ear pain, ringing, or a foreign-body sensation.
-
Regular hearing check-ups
People with a family history of hearing problems or frequent exposure to noise should have their hearing tested annually to detect and address issues early.
Nasal Health Care
-
Keep the nasal passages moist
In dry or heavily polluted environments, the nasal lining can become dry and irritated. Use saline nasal spray to clean the nose or run a humidifier indoors to increase humidity.
-
Avoid picking your nose excessively
Picking can damage the nasal mucosa and cause infection. Gently clean the nose with warm water and tissue instead.
-
Prevent allergies
If you have allergic rhinitis, stay away from triggers such as dust mites, pollen, or pet dander. Change bed sheets and pillowcases regularly and use dust-mite-proof bedding.
-
Protect sinuses during colds
Blow your nose gently during a cold. Forceful nose-blowing can push secretions into the sinuses and cause sinusitis.
-
Quit smoking and avoid second-hand smoke
Smoking and second-hand smoke irritate the nasal mucosa and increase the risk of nasal congestion, rhinitis, and sinusitis.
Throat Health Care
-
Reduce voice strain
Talking loudly or shouting for long periods can damage the vocal cords. Stay hydrated, rest your voice regularly, and avoid forcing your voice when hoarse. Seek medical help early if hoarseness persists.
-
Avoid irritating foods and drinks
Limit extremely hot, cold, or spicy foods, as well as alcohol and caffeine-containing beverages, which can dry or irritate the throat.
-
Stay well-hydrated
Drinking plenty of water keeps the throat mucosa moist and reduces discomfort, especially after prolonged speaking or exposure to air-conditioning.
-
Treat throat infections promptly
Avoid excessive coughing or throat-clearing when you have a sore throat, as this can further damage the mucosa. Seek medical advice early if throat infections recur.
General ENT Health Advice
-
Improve sleep quality
Sleep apnoea or chronic snoring not only affects sleep but also puts stress on the ENT system. Try side-sleeping and consult a doctor for sleep studies or treatment if needed.
-
Maintain good air quality
Avoid prolonged exposure to polluted or dusty environments. Use an air purifier at home and clean air-conditioner filters regularly to reduce allergens and harmful particles.
-
Exercise and boost immunity
Regular moderate exercise strengthens immunity and helps resist ENT infections. A balanced diet rich in vitamin C and antioxidants supports healthy mucous membranes.
-
Regular health check-ups
Even without symptoms, schedule an annual ENT specialist examination. This helps detect potential issues early, such as nasal polyps, vocal cord polyps, or early tumours.
-
Seek medical help early – don’t delay
If you experience persistent tinnitus, nasal congestion, sore throat, or any other discomfort, see a doctor promptly to prevent worsening or complications.
